Overkill Frontman Talks Tattoos

It was in the early 80s when I first heard of the band OVERKILL. My band HADES came up in the New Jersey club scene at the same time. They were certainly more theatrically advanced than my band. The first time we opened for them was at the Union Jack in central Jersey. I was complaining to them that they were taking too long to do their sound check when Overkill vocalist, Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth, purposely stood on my hand. What a dick! Who knew my next band would open for Overkill for their American as well as European tours in 1993? I "retired" soon after that. I last saw Overkill two weeks ago in NYC, and the band and Blitz are still going strong. I thought I'd ask my buddy Blitz a few tattoo related questions before jumping into our love of sports:

bobby blitz ellsworth, overkill band

Dan Lorenzo: How old were you when you got your first tattoo?
Bobby Blitz: I was 40...it was the first step to a divorce, the closing chapter.

Did anybody in your family object to it?
No, not that I remember.

I know you're an intelligent person. Did you ever ask the artist what type of ink they're about to use on you?
I did not...it was a trust situation for me, a close friend.  I really knew nothing of the art prior to my first experience.

Do you have a "go-to" artist you prefer?
Johnny Eagle in West Milford, NJ. I rode in a MC club with him for over seven years, it was a no brainer. "Bobby, c'mon down, we'll fix you up".

Do you see yourself getting any more ink in the near future?
No, I'm done.  My idea was one tattoo in separate places. To add to it would ruin the original idea.

As a front man, why do you think you connect so well with your audience?
Well first of all I'm a student of the game, I didn't invent this stuff.  It's Iggy, Freddie, James, Ian, Dee, Ronnie, Lemmy....the list goes on and on. I remember a guy in a young band asking me about it, I told him the same and "steal the good stuff man."

Would it be fair to call you a pseudo-jock?
More of an arm chair hockey goalie, baseball manager, and quarterback. Though I do get my fair share of injuries. Just last week someone stepped on my hand. Karma, right? (laughs)

Absolutely. Do you think if the Giants had JPP this year it would have made a big difference?
Well as we lead the NFC east by one game I would say no, as JPP seems to pick up his game as the season progresses.

Do you think the Giants can do any damage in the playoffs if Cruz is healthy?
Let's make the playoffs first, but Victor is the real deal....paired with Odell a lethal combination.

What have you been listening to lately?
HADES...The Cursed. Great stuff, makes me wish The Cursed did a second record.

You're not really listening to HADES lately are you?
No, I'm not. I was kissing ass in a promotional type way. (laughs)

That's not necessary, but thanks for mentioning The Cursed! How many more OVERKILL cds can you envision releasing?
Oh man, I really don't know. I've always been more about the moment and squeezing it for all it's worth. I think if I project, I ruin that moment. Let's just say...."at least one more".
