Tattoo supply distributor Roy Rose has purchased a piece of film history in a town outside of Austin, Texas, and he is turning it into an attraction for film buffs and horror fans. The Last Chance gas station, a prominent film location in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, is being renovated and turned into a barbecue horror resort. He is calling it “The Gas Station.” If you’re like me, your first question is: what the heck is a barbecue horror resort? That’s because it is probably the first of its kind. To understand the premise of The Gas Station, you need to understand a few things about The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The movie is a cult classic that has inspired hundreds of imitators and horror writers since its release in 1974. It became infamous for its graphic scenes of blood and gore as it depicted cannibalism, and it is one of the most influential horror films of all time.
In the movie, a group of tourists who find themselves at the infamous Last Chance gas station were tormented, killed and eaten by a family of cannibals. For its time, this was an extremely violent film. So violent in fact, that the film was banned in some countries and discontinued in many of the theatres that originally decided to screen the movie, because of all the complaints about gruesome imagery. In The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the gas station and barbecue service was run by Drayton Sawyer, the patriarch of the cannibal family. At the barbecue stop, Drayton had a tendency to serve customers his famous human chili. The Gas Station has not yet released a menu, but it is expected that some form of chili will be included, and perhaps a mystery meat. With Ari Lehman, the actor who played the original Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th as an investor, I’m sure they will be cooking up all sorts of horrific surprises.
In addition to turning the place into a barbecue joint, there will be a horror museum on site, a smoker house, and a stage for live music. There is also going to be an area dedicated to playing the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre. For those of you with a long trek to this horror hangout in Bastrop, Texas, there will be four cabins behind the filling station available for guests interested in an overnight stay. That is, assuming you are brave enough to actually fall asleep on the premises. The resort will also feature a vaguely described shower house. Regardless of the amenities, it should give rise to quite a few sleepless nights.
A grand opening celebration will take place on Saturday, October 8th, and Texas Chain Saw Massacre star Ed “The Hitchhiker” Neal will be in attendance, but the barbecue service won’t start until a later date. Roy Rose describes the newly converted gas station as a “safe, fun and scary place for families and everybody to come and have a good time.” Mr. Rose also notes that the iconic locale will also feature a gift shop with horror movie memorabilia. So if you are a film buff, a fan of barbecue, or you are just looking for a good excuse to do something different, check out The Gas Station; it will surely be an unforgettable experience.
